Find Cover by Your Cancer Situation
Where you are in your cancer journey makes a significant difference to your insurance options. Select the situation that matches yours for tailored guidance.
Cancer in Remission
Being in remission significantly improves your travel insurance prospects — most New Zealand insurers will assess your application individually and many will offer cover with an additional premium. The critical point is that remission does NOT mean your cancer is automatically covered. You must still declare it and complete a medical assessment.
During Cancer Treatment
Travelling during active cancer treatment is possible for some people with medical clearance — and travel insurance is available on a case-by-case basis. The outcome depends heavily on the specific treatment, your oncologist's assessment of fitness to travel, and which insurer you approach. Some insurers will decline; others will offer a policy with exclusions or with full cover for an additional premium.
Stable Cancer
Stable cancer — cancer that is present but being managed with medication or monitoring, without aggressive active treatment — represents one of the more favourable situations for travel insurance assessment. The key is that your cancer is not progressing rapidly, you are not on IV chemotherapy, and your oncologist considers you fit to travel.
Historical Cancer / All Clear
If you have been cancer-free for years — even decades — you still MUST declare your cancer history when applying for travel insurance. This is the most common misunderstanding in cancer travel insurance. Most insurers can and do cover people with historical cancer, but non-disclosure — even for cancer diagnosed 15 years ago — can void your entire policy.
Newly Diagnosed
A new cancer diagnosis — particularly where investigations are still ongoing or a treatment plan has not yet been established — is the most challenging situation for travel insurance. Most insurers cannot provide cancer-specific cover when the full diagnosis picture is unclear. However, you may still be able to purchase a policy that covers other travel risks, and some insurers can assess even recent diagnoses if the staging and treatment plan is confirmed.
Coverability ratings are general guides based on typical insurer behaviour. Your actual outcome depends on your specific medical history and the insurer you apply to. Always complete the medical assessment for a personal result. Compare all 7 providers →
